Mount Abram Captures Boys and Girls Overall Championships
After two postponements of the second day of competition, the MVC Championships concluded at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington. When the final scores were tallied, it was the Mt. Abram Boys and Girls taking the overall championships based on combined nordic and alpine scores.
The Lady Roadrunners combined score of 213 was over one hundred points better than second-place Mountain Valley at 320. Spruce Mountain finished third with a score of 336. Mountain Valley captured the alpine championship with a strong showing in the slalom race at Titcomb, while Winthrop won the nordic championship, outdistancing Dirigo by three points.
The Chisholm Ski Club and Black Mountain of Maine hosted a High School 5K Nordic Freestyle Race on January 17th. Dylan Thombs of Monmouth Academy led all boy skaters with a time of 15:33.4 to take top honors. Zack Tannebaum of Edward Little High School took the silver with a time of 15:58.2 while Tom Faraday of Mt. Abram High School came in third finishing in 16:24.6. Mountain Valley Falcon Conner Woods came in fourth (17:38.4), while Ethan Cantin and Michael Chow of Dirigo High School finished fifth and sixth. B
The nordic racing season came to an end with the completion on the Bates Winter Carnival Men's 15K Mass Start Freestyle race on February 23rd. In that race, Scott Patterson of the University of Vermont grabbed the gold medal with a time of 36:56.5. Dartmouth took the next two podium spots with Sam Tarling finishing second at 37:41.0 and teammate Silas Talbot finishing third with a time of 37:55.9.
The win was the second victory in two days for Patterson, who took the gold in Friday's 10K Classical Race, finishing the famed "Chummy Broomhall' course in 27:19.8. Tarling again took second at 27:21.8 with Middlebury's Benjamin Lustgarten crossing the finish line at 27:27.1.
In the Women's 10K freestyle on Saturday, it was Dartmouth's Mary O'Connell taking top honors in a photo-finish with a two-lap time of 28:29.2, crossing the finish line only .1 second ahead of Vermont's Anja Gruber. Taking the bronze was UVM's first-lap leader Linda Danvind-malm at 28:39.1.
Like Patterson, Mary O'Connell who took gold in the Friday's Women's 5K Classical Race. Middlebury's Annie Pokorny earned the silver medal with a time of 15:05.8 and Dartmouth''s Emily Blackmer grabbed the bronze, finishing in 15:26.1.
Black Mountain Ski Resort was the site of the 2013 Eastern High School Championship Alpine Qualifier on Saturday, March 2nd. This event featured the top alpine finishers from the MPA Class A, B, and C State High School Championships that were held in February. Skiers competed for a chance to represent Maine as a member of the State Alpine Team at the Eastern High School Championship being held at Cannon Mountain, on March 8th, 9th, and 10th.
Ryan Nicols and Natalie Bolduc won the men's and women's divisions of the Nate Gallant 5k Fun Run/Walk that was held in Rumford on Sunday, May 5th. All proceeds from the race, organized by Rumford resident and Rite-Aid employee Marie Gauvin and named after Meroby Elementary School 1st grader Nate Gallant, will be donated to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital in Portland. Over 200 people participated in the fund-raiser.
Nicols, a senior baseball player at Mountain Valley High School, finished the course, which started and finished at Hosmer Field Complex, in a time of 17:48. Nick Young crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 18:27, followed closely by Gunnar Bradbury and Shawn St. Cyr at 18:28. Zak Radcliffe was 5th at 19:08 and Craig Milledge finished 6th with a time of 19:49.
The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and the Mountain Valley Conference are once again teaming for their league skiing championships. Day One of the Championships will be at Black Mountain Ski Resort while Titcomb Mountain in Farmington will host Day Two.
