Brynne Robbins, skiing for the Mt. Blue High School Cougars, won the 2022 Sassi Memorial Classical 5k
at Black Mountain of Maine. Robbins winning time was 16:26.2 to capture the title. Her teammates, Nora McCourt and Moriah Reusch, finished 2nd and 3rd to join her on the podium. McCourt's time was 16:29.0 while Reusch strode across the line in 17:06.3.
Finishing in 4th place was Orono's Mountain Valley Conference Nordic Champion Ruth White, who had a time of 17:19.3. 5th place went to Katherine Garcia of Edward Little (17:31.1) with Cougar Bridget Reusch finishing in 6th (17:32.3). Rounding out the top 10 were Emily Kidd of Mt. Abram (17:53.7), Hannah Grohman of Gould (18:01.6), Nora Condit of Edward Little (18:01.6), and Mt. Blue's Kamryn Joyce (18:13.2).
In an unusual Thursday afternoon running of the 2022 Sassi Memorial Classical, Carson Zundel of Mt. Blue HS
edged Mt. Abram's Alex Hemingway by .4 of a second to capture the title. The race at Black Mountain of Maine was a makeup of the race that was postponed on Saturday, January 29th due to a massive snowstorm.
In a race that featured wave starts of 5 skiers, many high school teams took advantage of the opportunity to ski the same course that will be used in the MPA state Nordic Championships next week.
Zundel completed the course that included the infamous High School Hill in a time of 14:03.8. Hemingway, who went out in the first wave, finished in 14:04..2 to win the silver. Yarmouth's Owen Redfield took the final podium position with a time of 14:17.3, just .2 second ahead of 4th place finisher Logan Ouelette of Leavitt (14:17.5).
5th place went to Henri McCourt of Mt. Blue with a time of 14.29.6. In 6th place was Aksel Yeo of Yarmouth with a time of 14:41.0 with his teammate Cornelius Welsh coming in 7th with a 14:55.3 time. Aroostook County skier George Ferland of Caribou HS came in 8th, crossing the line at the 14:55.4 tick. Also finishing in the top 10 were Mt. Abram's Cam Walters (15:04.2) and Max Olmstead of Maranacook HS (15:24.6).
