Emma Charles of Mt. Blue High School secured the gold medal in the KVAC Championship Women's Nordic Classical Race at Titcomb Mountain on February 8th. Charles finished the 5k course in Farmington in 16:46.0 with teammate Brynne Robbins taking the silver with a time of 18:04.7. The final podium spot went to Leavitt High School's Jaidyn Negley, who crossed the finish line in 18:59.6. Other top six finishers were Mt. Blue's Bridget Reusch and Kamryn Joyce and Maranacook's Sophie O'Clair.

The 2020 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and the Mountain Valley Conference will be holding their combined league championships on Wednesday February 5th at Black Mountain of Maine in Rumford and on Saturday, February 8th at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.

 


2019 mvc kvac logo round 180Emma Charles of Mt. Blue High School captured the KVAC 300 CHARLES EmmaNordic 5k Freestyle Championship at Black Mountain on February 5th. Charles, who swept the league competition last year as a freshman, completed the solid course in 13:29.2. Behind her was teammate Brynn Roberts, finishing in 14:25.1. Mt. Blue's Kamryn Joyce finished in third with a time of 14:54.6 to complete the podium sweep for the Cougars. Other strong finishers were Jaidyn Negley of the Leavitt Hornets, Bridget Reusch of Mt. Blue, and Maranacook's Maura Taylor.

 
 

311 MCPHEDRAN CarterIn the last race of the day, the boy's 5k Freestyle mass start was won by Carter McPhedran of Maranacook, who skated across the finish line in 12:18.8. Harrison Bigos-Lowe of Edward Little High School came in second with a time of 12:47.8. The final podium position was captured by Evan Hornback of Mt. Blue, who had a finish of 12:58.6. Day 2 of the KVAC Championships are scheduled for Saturday, February 8th at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington. This will be a 5k classical pursuit race.

2019 mvc kvac logo round 180Leah Ruck of Orono High School captured the individual 2020 26 RUCK LeahMountain Valley Conference Freestyle Championship at Black Mountain of Maine on February 5th, completing the 5k course in 17:10.8. The Red Riots are an associate member of the MVC during the ski season. Sam Allen of Winthrop was second to cross the finish line with a time of 17:29.6. Third place went to Mt. Abram's Emily Kidd, finishing in 17:45.7. Completing the top six finishers were Ruck's teamate Megan Gerbi, Winthrop's Maya Deming, and Mila Long-Frost of Mt. Abram HS.

114 HEMINGWAY AlexIn the MVC boys 5k freestyle, First to skate across the finish was Alex Hemingway of Mt. Abram, who completed the fast course in 13:14.2, the become the 2020 MVC Freestyle Champion.  His winning time was 13:14.2.  His teammate Cam Walters took second place, finishing in 13:52.9. Spruce Mountain's Abrahm Geisinger was third, crossing the line in 13:59.1.

Originally scheduled as a classical mass start race, the technique was changed to a skate race due to the fact that the course, which had adequate cover, was too hard to set a track. Championships continue on Saturday, February 8th at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington with the 5k Classical Pursuit.

2019 mvc kvac logo round 180The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Skiing Championships began at 442 GORDON TAYLOR 250Black Mountain on February 5th with the Giant Slalom Competition. Taylor Gordon of Mt. Blue High School was the fastest girl in the league competition.  Her winning combined time was 1:47.85.  Anna Baldwin of Hampden Academy came in second with a time of 1:52.05. Third place went to Oxford Hills HS sophomore Liz Dieterich, whose combined time was 1:53.14. Also finishing in the top six were Jordan Cummings of Edward Little High School, Mazie Gordon of Mt. Blue, and Anna Erb of Maranacook High School.

In the boys' competition, Colby Vandecker of Oxford Hills became the 2020 KVAC Giant Slalom Champion with a winning combined time of 1:39.58..  Mt. Blue's Eli Yeaton came in 512 VANDECKER COLBY 250second with a time of 1:40.32. Sam McKee of Maranacook HS was the third fastest on the day with a combine score of 1:44.02. Rounding out the top six were Jake Mills of Oxford Hills HS, Caellen Robert of Camden Hills HS, and the Red Eddies Connor Brann.

The KVAC Alpine Championships are schedule to conclude on Saturday at Titcomb Mtn with the slalom compepition.

2019 mvc kvac logo round 180Day 1 of the Mountain Valley Conference Skiing Championships kicked off at 416 LANDRY ABBEYBlack Mountain on February 5th with the Giant Slalom Competition. In the Women's MVC races, Abbey Landry of Telstar skied to a first place finish with a winning two-run-time of 1:48.14. Spruce Mountain's Baily Coates took second with 2:03.61. Taking third place was Bristol Quimby of Rangeley High School (1:56.79). Rangeley competes in the Mountan Valley Conference as an associate member. Rounding out the top six finishers were Adria Plourde of Spruce Mountain, Alice Mackay of Mt. Abram HS, and Maddy Papianou of Mountain Valley High School.

In the Men's competition, Charlie Pye of Rangeley won with a time of 2:03.61. Jack Gilbert of Spruce Mountain came in second with a score of 2:04.48. Third place went to Mt. Abram's Sullivan Bulter, who was right behind Gilbert with a two-run total of 2:04.52. 515 PYE CHARLIE 250Other top six finishers were Brandon Coates of Spruce Mountain and Mountain Valley's Aaron Labrash and Sebin Heemskerk.

Competition shifts to Titcomb Mountain in Farmington for Day 2 of competition on Saturday, February 8th.
