sassi logo2Yarmouth High School Senior Sophia Laukli took on the Sassi 5K Women's laukliClassical and a field of 152 skiers and scorched the course, crossing the finish line in :14:25.7 to win the gold medal at Black Mountain of Maine on January 27th. Laukli's time was nearly one minute faster than the next competitor. Taking the silver was Olivia Skillings of Maine Coast Waldorf Academy with a time of :15:25.0. Winning the bronze was Jenny Wilbraham of Morse HS in Bath with a time of :15:58.4. The race on the John Roderick Trail System was the first using the Chisholm Ski Club's new track setter. It was the third race of the day, with the Jr. Sassi 3K taking place earlier in the morning, and the tracks set up well and lasted through the last racer of the day.

Rounding out the top ten were Lilly Horne (Freeport), Meghan Charles (Mt. Blue), Sierra Aponte-Clarke (Deering), Zoe Maguire (Fryeburg), Laura Parent (Maranacook), Emily Carty (Fryeburg) and Hannah Corey (Yarmouth).

Liam NilesIn the men's 5K that followed, Sophomore Liam Niles of Portland HS crossed the finish line in :13:40.6 to take top honors. Second place went to Nick Neveu of Maine Coast Waldork HS in Freeport with a time of :13:43.8 2.0. Taking the final podium spot with a time of :13:52.9 was Peter Jordan, skiing for Deering HS in Portland. Other top 10 finishers in a field of 175 skiers were Sam Holt (Orono), Luke Bartol (Maranacook), Carter McPhedran (Maranacook), Mark McLaughlin (Maranacook), Cameron Bancroft (Oxford Hills), John Giddens (Freeport), and Roy Varney (Leavitt).

In team scoring, the Yarmouth women's team finshed first with 60 points, followed closely by Maine Coast Waldorf in second with 62 points and Gould Academy with 71 points. Rounding out the top 6 were Maranacook (93), Freeport (107), and Mt. Blue (110).

The Maranacook men's team took top team honors with 54 points. Mt. Blue came in second with 65 points, followed by Maine Coast Waldorf with 73 points. Other top schools were Yarmouth (111), Freeport (119), and Falmouth (120).
