The Orono girls, in their first year as an affiliate member of the Mountain Valley Conference in Nordic Skiing, dominated a field of 18 skiers in the 5K Classical to take the Day 1 lead in the MVC team standings on February 8th. Led by gold medalist Liza Gallandt, the Red Riots captured the top 4 spots in the mass start race at the historic John Roderick Trail System at Black Mountain of Maine.
Gallandt finshed the race in :20:27.5. Taking the silver and bronze medals were teammates Leah Ruck (:21:54.4 ) and Becca Gallandt (:22:13.0 ). Orono's Erin Gerbi took 4th in (:22:57.1). Rounding out the top 10 were Winthrop's Sam Allen, Krista Bass of Orono, Mt. Abram's Alice Cockerham, Winthrop's Maya Deming, Danielle Parker of Monmouth, and Boothbay's Sumer Chamberlin.
In the boys' race, Gaelan Boyle-Wight held of Orono's Sam Holt to capture the gold medal with a time of :17:04.1. Holt finished only three seconds behind him, crossing the finish line in :17:07.0 to take the silver. Mt. Abram took a first day lead in the boy's team standings by grabbing the next 4 finishers. Brandon Hemingway led the way with his bronze medal time of :17:59.6. Fellow Road Runners Levi Bouchard, David Kidd, and Dylan Starbird were the next three finishers. Dirigo's Ethan Couture, Dillon Wells of Mt. Abram, Vincent Scott and Damien Nadeau of Dirigo also finished in the top ten.
At the end of the day of racing, Orono girls had a comfortable lead with 10 points with Winthrop in second with 43 points. Boothbay (64) and Mt. Abram (67) were in a tight race for the third position.
In the boys team standings, Mt. Abram has a nice cushion with 18 points, followed by Mtn. Valley with 55 points. Also in the top 4 after Day 1 were Telstar (63) and Dirigo (64).
Racing continues on Friday at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington with the 5K Freestyle Pursuit. The girls race is scheduled to start at 2:00 pm.
