Orono High School left their mark on the MVC Nordic Skiing Championships in their first year as an affiliate member of the conference. Lisa Gallandt was the individual champion in the Classical race on Day 1, and followed that up on Day 2, winning the 5K Nordic Freestyle Pursuit race with a time of 19:44.9. Races were held at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.
In the Freestyle Pursuit, racers begin at intervals based on their times in the Classical race. Gallandt was being chased most closely by teammate's Leah Ruck, Becca Gallandt, and Erin Gerbi. Gerbi, who finished 4th in the Classical, passed Becca Gallandt and made up 10 seconds on Ruck, taking third place in the pursuit and second in the freestyle with a time of :21:30.4 (:44:27.4 combined). Ruck's time of :21:40.5 in the freestyle was good enough for the bronze medal in that event and a second place finish in the pursuit. But is was Lisa Gallandt's day again as she had the fastest time in the Freestyle event to lenghten her lead and take the gold medals in both the Freestyle and Pursuit events. Her times were :19:44.9 in the Freestyle and :40:11.9 combined.
The Lady Red Riots took 5 of the top 6 places in the Freestyle, which earned them the 2018 MVC Nordic Team Championship with a score of 20 points.. Finishing behind Orono was Winthrop in second place with 87 points. Boothbay took third with a team score of 125.
In an exciting boys race Sam Holt of Orono closed in on Classical Champion Gaelan Boyle-Wight at the finish but finshed 1 second behind him to take second place in the pursuit. Holt, who started 3 seconds behind Boyle-Wight, finshed with the fastest time of the day at :16:37.6 to capture the gold medal in the 5K Freestyle race. Boyle-Wight, who skis for the Telstar Rebels, took the silver medal in the Freestyle with a time of :16:39.6. His time of :33:44.6 earned the skier from Bethel the overall pursuit championship.
Levi Bouchard of Mt. Abram High School in Salem came in third in the Freestyle race with a time of 17:46:7 to earn the bronze. He was chasing teammate Brandon Hemingway, who had an 85 second lead at the start. Bouchard closed the gap some, but Hemingway's time of :17:55. 4 gave him a third place finish in the pursuuit.
Perrenial powerhouse Mt. Abram boys captured the MVC Nordic Team Championship with 36 points. Host Mountain Valley came in second with 110 points, followed by Telstar with 126.
Competition continues on Saturday with the beginning of the Alpine races at Titcomb.
