Sophia Laukli of Yarmouth, Maine captured the gold medal in the women's 5k Freestyle event to open the 2018 Eastern High School Championships at Black Mountain of Maine on March 16th. Laukli's time of 11:55.4 was 1.5 seconds faster than silver medalist Callie Young of Jay, Vermont. Abigail Streinz of Stockholm, Maine won the bronze with a time of 12:11.8. Rounding out the top six finishers were Rena Schwartz of Middlesex, Vermont, Mae Chalmers of Landgrove, Vermont, and Lincoln, Massachusetts' Laura Appleby.
In placing 6 girls in the top 9 finishers, Vermont grabed the team women's lead after day one's competition.
In the men's division, it was Ben Ogden of Landgrove, Vermont taking the top honors, completing the 5K Skate race in 9:55.2. Coming in second was Ogden's teammate Greg Burt of Huntington, Vermont, who completed the course in 10:10,1. Grabbing the final podium position was Scott Schulz of Lake Placid, NY. Other finishers in the top 6 were Joshua Valentine of Gilford, NH, Oliver Snow of Weston, Massachusetts, and James Kitch of Belmont, Massachusetts.
With the strong day of racing, the Vermont men and women hold a commanding lead in the team standing after Day 1. Racing continues on Saturday with the 7.5k Classical and 1.2k Sprints.
