Nick Newman of Mountain Valley High School and Shellby Cowin of Greenville High School captured the gold medals in the 2017 Maine Principals Association Class B Giant Slalom at Black Mountain on February 21st. Newman took top boy honors with times of 46.76 and 47.66 for a two run total of 1:34.42. Nathan Delmar of Maranacook HS had a combined time of 1:39.57 to win the silver while Greenville HS Junior John Watt came in third.
Team Alpine standings after day 1 had Maranacook with the lead with 50 points, followed closely by Fort Kent in second with 52 points and Mountain Valley in third with 59 points.
In the girls competition, Cowen won the gold with scores of 47.08 and 47.31 for two run total of 1:34.39. Yarmouth's Marggaret Elder took the silver and Maranacook's Rachel Tooth took the final poidium spot.
First day team scores for the girls showed Yarmouth HS with a commanding lead with 33 points, followe by runner up Maranacook HS with 52 points and Fort Kent with 54 points.
Racing continues on Wednesday with the Slalom competition.
