Fiona Ahearne, with her grandmother cheering her on, earned gold in the 2016 Women's Sassi Memorial Classical at Black Mountain Ski Resort on January 30th. Ahearne, who skis for Maine Coast Waldorf (formerly Merriconeag), finshed the 5K course in 17:16.3 to take the gold.
Lilly Johnson of Freeport won the silver medal with a time of 17:19.5 while Lucy Alexander of Yarmouth earn bronze, finishing the race in 17:46.6 3.
Rounding out the top six were Yarmouth's Sophia Laukli, teammate Grace Cowles, and MCW's Olivia Skillings. The Yarmouth women took the team championship.
For the men it was Maranacook's Luca Deangelis, son of longtime Black Bear coach Steve Deangelis, who took the top honors with a finish of 14:29:8. Tucker Barber, skiing for the Cougars of Mt. Blue, took the silver with a time of 14:52.3. Porland's Brad Ravenelle captured the bronze, finishing only four tenths of a second behind Barber at 14:52.7. Completing the top six were John Lane of Yarmouth, Bennett Hight of Freeport and Deering's Caleb Niles.
Mt. Blue was the overall team winner for the men. Congratulations to all of the racers.
